''If you accomplish something good with hard work, the labor passes quickly, but the good endures; if you do something shameful in pursuit of pleasure, the pleasure passes quickly, but the shame endures.''
This is a quote by ancient Stoic philosopher Musonius Rufus, I found this to be very applicable to the practice of abstaining from PMO. When one manages to abstain from pleasure derived from a source that provides shame afterwards, the hard work will be rewarded in the end. Good luck everyone!

2021.10.21 10:49 Grose040791 How much will yall end up having in student loans after graduation?

Hey yall, im factoring in how much debt I will eventually be in and I am guessing itll be around 50k once all is said and done. I was wondering the average student loan debt for for MLS students are. I was pretty stupid during undergrad and made really poor decisions regarding paying out of state tuition, ect.

Also, does anyone know/currently enrolled in a 20 year income based repayment plan? Do you know if MLS qualify for any loan forgiveness plans like some RNs do? Thank you all, im just feeling a bit overwhelmed

Training In October 2020 I picked up running again and have been running three times a week since then. 10 years ago I also ran regularly, but with a way lower pace and unhealthy diet.
Somewhere in December 2020 I ran my first half marathon distance and decided as a New Years' resolution to run my first marathon in 2021, with a goal time of under 3:30.
With a newborn I didn't want to be away from home a lot. While doing some research, I found the Bridge Ridge Run under 3 hours training schedule. That fit my situation perfectly and was eager to dive into it. In the meantime, I updated my goal time from 3:30 to 3:15 and the training schedule pushed me towards below 3 hours. I signed up for the Amsterdam Marathon in June with an estimated time of 2:58.
The training went smooth, really smooth actually. Coincidentally I was doing similar runs so was already used to the types of runs. I only missed weeks 6 and 7 due to a vacation.
Most of the schedule consists of running at marathon pace and the 2-hour long runs with only drinking water and then running 6 miles at marathon pace were very interesting and challenging. I believe running regularly at your marathon pace really makes it your go-to pace when sort of speeding up to a steady pace. It becomes a habit. My peak miles per week was around 41 miles. During training my marathon pace was 6:40 min/mile, which could lead to a 2:55 marathon time.

Pre-race Some runners in my family and friends were telling me my sub 3 goal was really ambitious and some even said impossible due to me only running for 1 year. That made me a bit nervous and doubt myself, especially during the last weeks where tapering makes you run a lot less miles. At the same time, I felt really strong mentally and physically after the tempo runs. We stayed in a hotel close to the start which is in the Olympic Stadium, which removed a lot of stress. I ate some granola as breakfast 2 hours before the start, took a shower and drank a bottle of electrolyte sports drink in the metro an hour in advance. Collected the free t-shirt, dropped off my bag and got in the stadium itself half an hour before the start. Luckily there were sufficient toilets near the starting area. Got into the yellow starting area (for all runners with an estimated finish time of 2:41 - 3:01) and retied my shoes. Didn't really do a warm-up, aside from running for a bit to check my shoes were tied correctly. The weather was perfect, all hyped and ready to go.
Race Wow, the race itself, what an impressive experience that was! I could go on and on about how it's amazing to run with people from all over the world; I saw running shirts from Poland, Ukrain, Belgium, Spain, Mexico, France, etc. I took it very easy for the first miles: I read a lot of race reports on this subreddit and took advice to heart. :) That actually led me to keep a slower pace than my training marathon pace. I just didn't know what to expect actually. Also the week before a calf injury was coming up and didn't want to risk it. Therefore used the first miles as a kind of warming up. My heart rate was a lot lower than expected and not impacted by any nerves or adrenaline, which helped as well. There was an aid station every 5 kilometers / 3 miles. The first drink went all over my face as I had never drank from a cup while running before, haha. You got to learn sometime! Took my first gel after 5 miles and did so throughout the race.
I felt so strong and positive around 8 miles, started chatting with a guy in the group I was running in. We got outside of Amsterdam around mile 10 and ran alongside a river for the next ~7 miles. Then it dawned on me how impressive the experience was; everyone was running on their own but in the same pace. All I could hear was everyone's footsteps and some breathing. It felt amazing and actually a lot more fun than I expected. The crowd was great and a lot of people were yelling everyone's name as it was printed on every runner's bib.
My friends were near the aid station at 16 miles, so that was all I focused on. Kept my pace steady, surpassed a couple runners and was actually in the lead of the running group that formed naturally. There was only a slight headwind, so all good. Got to mile 16 and there was a big group of friends and family cheering and high-fiving while I passed them. I felt so happy I could cry, also felt really strong and sped up a bit. Then slowed back down as there were still 10 miles to go. At that point, I decided to keep going and try to finish the marathon sub 3, instead of aiming even faster at 2:55. I wanted to enjoy every bit of the race and couldn't care less about a couple of minutes less. This was based on not wanting to take a lot of risks during my first marathon as I never ran past 20 miles in training (and the longest marathon tempo run was 13 miles or so).
Things got a bit tougher around 19 miles, I could really notice this was 'new' for my body and had to settle in the tempo. Gels and sports drinks at aid stations were keeping me going, that worked out nicely. Luckily there were more people around me keeping a steady pace, so I could just follow them and keep going. It was also around this moment I finally surpassed the 3:00 pacers (they took off at the start and were quite ahead of me). During the entire race, I had seen the white 3:00 balloons bobbing along somewhere in the distance. They ran a very steady race which helped me, but I wanted to go faster. It's also very tricky to get a drink at an aid station when you're in a large group going at that pace.
Some rougher miles followed with bridges and tunnels (I'm used to basically 0 variety in altitude, so even if this is flat for you, it was kinda new to me), but still felt pretty happy with how things were going. Giving a thumbs up to the enthusiastic crowd and the miles slowly ticked away. Before I knew it we entered the Vondelpark and suddenly only one mile to go. I sped up a little, got to the stadium where a large crowd was cheering in front of it. A big smile on my finish and sped up towards the finish line. Crossed the finish line, saw the time on the board and knew it would be a 2:58, stopped Strava on my watch and couldn't believe the time it was showing: a 2:58. The same time as I had signed up with in June. Had to step over some runners who collapsed right after the finish line (luckily volunteers were helping them out), only to hear a group of people shouting my name: it was the same group of friends and family from mile 16 that were cheering and applauding for my performance on the grandstand. A very emotional and happy moment for me. :)
Post-race Received my medal, went to the toilet, and got out of the stadium. Collected my bag and felt a bit negative; a DJ was blasting loud obnoxious music while I just wanted some peace. Met up with my friends and family, drank and ate, put on some warm clothes and told everyone about of the most impressive experiences in my life, pure positive vibes from then on.
Lessons learned:
I still can't believe it actually all worked out. Everything worked out as planned and it all clicked. It does feel as if I'm bragging a lot about how I ran a sub 3 marathon the first time, while others struggle for years to break that magical barrier. I'm really not saying it is really easy; I had my struggles as well. I mostly want to share this story to show it's also possible with a lower amount of mpw and a different approach and what worked for me personally. I've been told I have talent, so I guess you'll see me here more often. :)

2021.10.21 10:49 Kappaccinocat Advice requested :)

Hi!
So currently I'm in a position where I have a pool 8 minutes from where I live. I don't work out a lot, other than walking a lot during the day. I've been thinking about swimming as a form of exercise, but more in a casual manner. Does anyone have some tips on how I should approach swimming as a hobby/workout? I was thinking maybe 1h a day in the pool.
Thank you! =)
